Parents as First Teachers- How to encourage your child to be safe and responsible passengers.

  • Teach your child to be a good passenger and to avoid distracting the driver – it will be best for both of you in the long run!
  • Make sure your child always gets out of the car on the footpath side.
  • It is the driver's responsibility to make sure that the correct seat belt or restraint is worn –but, encourage your child to take responsibility for their own safety as soon as they can.
  • In New Zealand it is compulsory to use a child restraint for children under five.
  • Children aged 5-8 years must use a child restraint if available, if not they must use a safety belt.
  • International research suggests that it's safest to keep using a child restraint and then a booster seat until a child can fit an adult safety belt properly.
  • Never put the same seat belt around yourself and your child, or strap two children together in the same seat belt.
